Matsumoto
At the ryokan, units are fitted with a wardrobe. All units have a shared bathroom, slippers and bed linen.
The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in.
Had to check in early which wasn't a problem. The two staff were great - they speak English quite well, and were very patient with our very poor Japanese. Dinner + Breakfast is really good (but you do need to let them know you would like to have dinner when you are making your booking).

Cozy place right in the middle of the Yamanouchi onsen route. One onsen is literally paces away.
Exceptional staff who went above and beyond (shoutout to Karinn in particular). Everyone I talked to spoke decent to good english.
Good food and decent toilet facilities.
I booked a cheap dorm bunk and was afraid it would be 15 snoring men in a barracks, but it was in fact a cozy three-bed room with privacy curtains on the beds.
You get everything you need for the nine onsen route for free, except the cloth to stamp at every onsen, which is ¥400.
Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi
Boasting open-air hot spring baths, a heated indoor pool and beautiful Japanese gardens, Senjukaku offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation that has a historic charm. Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a 15-minute drive away. I loved everything about this place. The location (walking distance to snow monkey park and to shibu onsen), the food, the rooms, the onsen was wonderful. It's a bit dated, but super well maintained. I actually liked the old school charm and luxury.

Japanese Yukata robes are provided and guests can enjoy views of the river or of the traditional stone-paved streets. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. The accommodation and onsen (for private use) were superb! The owners were very friendly and offered to drive me from/to the Yudanaka train station as well as to/from the Monkey Forest free of charge. The street the onsen is on was very beautiful, close to other onsens (if needed), restaurants and bars, but at the same time, very quiet. I recommend this place very much!
Nozawa Onsen
Japanese-style rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low table with seating cushions, and an LCD TV. They come with traditional futon bedding and yukata robes, while bathroom facilities are shared. The owner was so nice and friendly, always available to help and provide useful information. I rented all ski material and lift pass through him, and everything was so easy and efficient. The bedroom is spacious, with adorable traditional decoration and great view, and the bed was also super comfortable. The onsen on the hotel was the cherry on top of the cake, after a ski day. There was also a green slope (suitable to all levels) ending at 3 minutes away from the property, which was very convenient.

I would easily give this ryokan 12/10 if booking would let me. Such an amazing experience form every perspective and definitely surpassed all of our expectations. Beautiful spacious comfy rooms equipped with everything you might need. Extremely comfortable futon beds, sleeping on these made me really want to have these at home. Both indoor and outdoor onsens were great and were never crowded, you could always take your time and enjoy hot bath. We really enjoyed wearing yukatas in the ryokan which also added to the atmosphere of the place. Food was perfect as well! We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast and the dinner that we ordered was just phenomenal and probably one of the best ones we ever had. Can't even say how many dishes it included as there were just too many but everything was delicious and regardless of the food preferences you would find something you'll enjoy.
And finally the staff of the ryokan - extremely welcoming, helpful and willing to teach you something new about Japanese culture. They took us to the Jigokudani monkey park by car and were even offering to drive us to the train station when we were leaving even though it's like 5 minutes away by feet.
Just to sum this up, If you're considering going to Yudanaka - this is THE place to stay.

Excellent ryokan with large rooms and service. Helpful staff, wonderful traditional breakfast and dinner. The ryokan has two onsens in different styles (modern and old) with indoors and outdoors springs. Traditional clothes are provided. Located relatively close to the Wild snow monkey park.
Yumoto-san has a very welcoming and lovely ryokan and we stayed in a traditional family room with shoji and tatami mats. We loved the ambiance, the view, and the onsen facilities. We also got a free lift to the snow monkey park. Great for families in a place full of character even if everything is a little dated.
A nice small ryokan run by a family. The onsen is a good size and there was a private one outside which you could use. They had kimono and yukata to use while you explored the onsen in the town. The rooms were very large and had en-suites. They had a coffee and hot water machine downstairs to use and lots of information about the area. There is free parking during your stay if you let them know in advance. The man who greets you is very friendly!
Beautiful boutique-feeling ryokan with really wonderful staff. We celebrated two birthdays and I was able to coordinate the delicious cakes over email. They even helped us take a photo and printed it out so we all had a little souvenir <3 So thoughtful! The rooms and building were lovely, as was the outdoor onsen. We did the private onsen experience too which was a little extra, but worth it especially to spend time with a partner. Food was tasty and yukatas were very pretty. Felt like a little dream.
I highly recommend this ryokan. Dinner and breakfast was amazing. Onsen experience with family was great. We arrived by car and Akira managed to provide a parking spot for us. The rooms were spacious and futons were comfortable for us. Heating system works great during our mid winter stay. Toiletries and yukatas were provided. While we were about to leave, he is assisting some guests to be dropped off at Snow Monkey Park which I think is great if you have no car.
The staff were superbly friendly while retaining the unique traditional ryokan atmosphere. The onsens were beautiful and entirely peaceful. Both the guest rooms and the dining rooms were beautiful tatami rooms that when paired with the yukatas really made you feel the atmosphere at its most. The shuttle bus service to the snow monkey park and train station was also incredibly helpful!
It is a ryokan, Japanese style hotel, just in the street a few hundred meters away from the Zenko-ji (temple). The house is very old. The room looks beautyful, beds, (futons), Japanese chairs and table. The breakfasts and dinners were traditional Japanese. Lovely taste and made with care. There was an onsen, Japanes hot spring bath in the house. The staff was so friendly. They came up to our room to collect us for the meals. We have breakfast and dinner in a original Japanese (dining)room.
traditional Japanse ryokan including onsen and sleeping on tatami floors and futon beds. staff is warm welcoming and willing to go the extra mile for you (gives a ride to entrance monkey park, source of great info)
Beautiful old ryokan with super friendly and helpful team; quality service (the pickup from the train station, the drive to the monkey park); delicious food and superb cappuccino. Really enjoyed the traditional rooms (sleeping on futons) and the relaxed atmosphere in the ryokan. And not to forget: access to the 9 onsen baths as a guest of the ryokan. Try them all, walking towards them in traditional Japanese yukata and gets. Enjoyed every second of being here!
